The need for criminal justice reform has gotten a lot of attention recently, but there’s one aspect that rarely enters the conversation — sex offender registries. Online records of people convicted of sexual crimes are intended to keep everyone, especially children, safe from sexual predators — the words “sex offender,” after all, illicit the image of a violent rapist or child molester. However, just like American jails and prisons, these state registries are overcrowded and may be doing more harm than good, which is why Americans should be talking about sex offender registry laws more. Great article!!!
Another good article in hopes to bring light to the ineffectiveness of the sex offender registry. It has gone too far for too long. So called statistics that are not based on facts, mass hysteria, making false statements about re-offending (that should be illegal), and the list goes on. There are clearly more people to be worried about than the sex offenders who have been offense free for decades. The more people are added to the registry, the less effective will it be to monitor the clearly dangerous people as they will fall through the cracks with that many people on the registry. Something has to change….NOW.
That is why I have always been wondering how we as the family members can file a suit for harassment maybe. The registry affects us the same, and we should be in a protected class to file a class action suit.
You want to protect people from a menace to society then make tougher drunk driving laws and a DUI online registry! Talk about real world numbers instead of fantasy boogeyman BUT of course, sex is a much more taboo thing…just look at how well prohibition worked!
Sadly know we all know that a politician just has to use the phrase “if it saves one child…blah blah blah” and everyone’s minds instantly seem to switch off!
I get it…reproduction is crucial to the species survival but I think we would be a little bit more highly evolved than that!
